During the outdoor bowling off-season, usually from early October to mid April, the club provides three top quality short mats in the clubhouse for the use of members and visitors. These facilities are available to all playing members of the club at no extra charge. Guests, except for visiting teams, pay a nominal temporary membership fee.

Since strength and physical fitness are not essential for short mat bowling, this is an excellent introduction to the larger scale indoor and outdoor games - and it is a satisfying and popular sporting game in its own right. In general, the same bowls and shoes can be used for both forms of the game so the transition from one to another is easy! A limited stock of bowls of various sizes is available to be borrowed for trial purposes.

A mobile rack is used to store and lay the mats in the best possible manner for when the hall is in use for other purposes. On most Tuesday afternoons the club holds 'roll-up' sessions. These are informal and social sessions but members can hone their skills and learn the techniques of short mat bowling. This is the ideal opportunity for new and inexperienced bowlers to learn the game and meet new friends.

The club usually has a busy winter schedule of weekend friendly matches with other clubs. Although essentially competitive, these occasions are social events and inexperienced players are encouraged to have a go whilst being assured of a friendly and supportive welcome by their more experienced colleagues. Availability lists are posted in good time for names to be added. From these names teams and reserves are selected. A nominal fee is charged for each game, home or away, to fund the food provided at home games.

There are a few local short mat leagues that the club supports. Various squads have been formed to provide teams for these leagues. Being a little more competitive, a higher level of experience is recommended to join these teams but novices are also encouraged to enter.

A range of internal club competitions is organised each year and all members can enter. Several of our members are invited to play at Area and County level.

- in reality, you can play as much or as little short mat as you want, and can also quickly progress to any level you wish; once you have learned the basic skills, "everything is possible on the day", as with any sport. Have a go!
